Retro Print | Melbourne Collins Street

A rarely seen and carefully restored vintage Melbourne poster by renowned Australian poster artist Percy Trompf, circa 1940s. Looking west down Collins Street from the Spring Street end, several of Melbourne's landmark buildings are featured including the Manchester Unity building, the Melbourne Town Hall and Scots' Church to name a few.

Number 220 in the iconic Victorian Railways poster series, the foreground shows the hustle and bustle of city life including Melbourne's famous W2 Class trams, notable tram number 397 collecting passengers on City Route 47. Tram 397 was built for the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board by James Moore & Sons in South Melbourne and went into service in 1926. It was finally retired in 1987 after some 60 years of service.

Percy Trompf was born in Beaufort, Victoria, and educated at Sebastopol State School and the Ballarat Technical Art School. In 1923 he joined a Melbourne firm of commercial artists and designed chocolate boxes and wrappings for A. W. Allen Pty Ltd. Later, from his studio at Little Collins Street, he painted and designed thousands of advertising posters for clients such as Bryant & May (matches), Palmolive (soaps), Victorian Railways (travel and destination posters) and others
